In 1841 the British census states that William and Hannah Lander resided at Pudding Bay, Burslem, Staffordshire. William Lander was a porter. He was born in the county. (HO 107/987/6, Staffords, Burslem, ED 4, p. 17)

By the 1851 British census, the Landers had moved to Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire. The family resided at 10 Dunkirk Road. William Lander was a beer seller. John Wilson, a 52 year old farm labourer from Audley resided with them. (HO 107, piece 2001, folio 223, p. 24)

William and Hannah Lander with their daughter Frances lived at Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire. The family resided at Dunkirk Road. William Lander was a publican. He was born at Audley, Staffordshire, his wife at Cheadle and their daughter wat Burslem. Sarah Edge, a dressmaker from Newcastle, was visiting when the census was taken. In 1871 William Lander and his daughter Frances resided at 9 Dunkirk Road, Newcastle-under-Lyme. The census states that William Lander was a widower. He was a butcher who was born at Audley, Staffordshire. Frances Lander was unmarried with no stated occupation. (RG 10, piece 2834, folio 5, p. 3)

The 1851 census states that James and Eliza Lander with their children resided at Sytch Street, St. Paul's parish, Burslem. James Lander was a potter packer. Eliza was dress maker. Hannah was a potter warehouse girl. John and Robert were potter packer boys. James Lander was born in Audley. Eliza was born in Wolstanton. The children were all born in Burslem. (HO 107, piece 2003, folio 225, p. 21)

James and Eliza Lander with their large family resided at 39 Sant St., Burslem according to the 1861 census. James Lander was an 'earthen packer' while his hildren Hannah, John, Robert and Sarah were potters. James Lander (Jr.) was a potter's apprentice. The census stated incorrectly that all members of the family were born at Burslem. (RG 9, piece 1927, folio 58, p. 19)

In 1871 Eliza Lander appears as the head of household in the 1871 British census. She was a widow and a dressmaker. The census states that she was born in Burslem. Her son John and his wife Sarah resided with her along with her youngest son George. The family resided at 39 Saint Street, Burslem. (RG 10, piece 2850, folio 59, p. 17)
