William Mandley and Thirza Read were married at the Methodist New Connection Bethesda Chapel at Albion Street, Shelton, Hanley. After the baptismal of the first child at the Bethesda Chapel, the Mandley family started attending Saint John's Anglican Church, Burslem.
The 1851 census indicates that William and Thirza Mandley with their children resided at Black Hill, Rushton village, Burslem, Staffordshire. William Mandley was a boot and shoe maker. His five children were potters. His elder daughter Emma Lockett was widowed with a daughter of her own. All members of the family were born at Burslem. (HO 107, piece 2003, folio 541, p. 19)
When daughter Ann Mandley was married in December 1856, the marriage certificate states that William Mandley was a potter. In March 1857, daughter Fanny was married, the marriage certificate states that William Mandley was a cordwainer.
In 1861 the British census states that William and Thirza Mandley resided at 10 Bleak Street, Burslem, Staffotdshire. Their daughter and son-in-law Emma and Humphrey Webb resided with them. William Mandley was a shoemaker. Humphrey Webb was a pottery ovenman. Emma Webb was a potter (sconcer). William and Thirza Mandley and Emma Webb were born at Burslem. In 1871, the British census states that Thirza Mandley and her granddaughter Eliza Jane Lockett possibly shared a household with Joseph and Anne Stone. Thirza Mandley had no occupation. Eliza Lockett was a warehouse woman. They lived at 6 Bleak Street, Burslem. They were born in Burslem. (RG 10, piece 2854, folio 15, p. 22)
