Fatally Burnt. — A case in which death has resulted from burning has just occurred at the house of a man named John Thornton, who resides at Puddington, near Neston. One of Thornton’s nieces, a girl of thirteen, named Elizabeth Tilston, has been attending his wife during a recent illness. On Saturday night the girl went to bed, in a room where a fire was burning, with a companion of her own age; she remained there a short time before the fire warming herself, and while in this position her nightdress caught fire, and ran screaming downstairs and out of the house. Hearing her cries, her uncle immediately followed, and with the assistance of a gamekeeper, named Henry Henshaw, extinguished the flames, but not before the girl had been seriously burnt about the body. Dr. Blondin, of Neston, was at once called in, but his services were of no permanent avail, for his patient died at six o’clock on Sunday morning. (Cheshire Observer, Saturday, 9 Feb 1878)
