Franklyn Dorey had started his working life at a very young age in the early 1940s going to sea on merchant steamers. His way of life took him to many ports in the Caribbean and other areas in the Atlantic. In 1947 he met his soul mate, Eleanor Himmelman. In April 1954, they were married. In the early 1960s, wanting to be home with a desire to start his own business, Franklyn Dorey became a fish peddler. He ran this with success until 1963, to which he ventured into a poultry farm in LaHave, Nova Scotia. This operation grew such that in the late 1960s he acquired more land in Dublin Shore, Nova Scotia. For a time during this expansion, a hog operation was added as well. Farming was hard work for him, but he enjoyed it to which he never rested. Working seven days a week, a vacation or time off was something that was not in his vocabulary. By the mid-1970s, always wanting a new challenge, he tried his hand at the housing rental business and continued this into his senior years.50,68
