Herbert Veinott, service number 733729, served in the 25 Battalion of the Canadian Infantry (The Nova Scotia Regiment) during the First World War. Sergeant Veinott died from wounds on 8 August 1918 at the beginning of the Battle of Amiens and is buried in Adelaide Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, Somme, France.62
During the First World War, Herbert Veinott was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a strong enemy counter attack on our trenches on Aug: 21st. [1917] In repelling the counter attack the supply of bombs ran short and this N.C.O. made several trips under heavy fire, carrying bombs to the front line. When his platoon Lewis Gun was blown up, he rushed to another part of the trench, where a gun crew had become casualties, salvaged the gun and brought it into action alone against the enemy. By his splendid courage, aiding materially in saving the trench. His conduct throughout the whole period from Aug: 15th to 21st being worthy of the highest praise.” 103 The warding of the medal was announced in the Supplement to the London Gazette (p. 11979) on 19 November 1917.
