He recived his bachelor of science dregree vfrom Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1921 followed by a master’s dregree there in 1923. Professor Roy Hirtle was a founder Waterloo College, Waterloo, Ontario in 1923. When Waterloo College affiliated with the University of Western Ontario in 1924, he became professor of science and mathematics until his death in 1946. He was registrar of the college for 17 years.
