Wilbur McCoombs was a veteran of the Second World War having served with the West Nova Scotia Regiment, the Merchant Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a crew member on the R.M.S. Empress of Britain at the time that ship was torpedoed in October 1940. "Mac" was a rear gunner on a Lancaster bomber that collided over Italy. He was captured and held as a prisoner or war for two years. Following the war, Wilbur was employed with Bowater Mersey Paper Company for 32 years, retiring in 1979. While employed there, he played in the Mersey Band and was an instructor with the Air Cadets. After retirement, Wilbur McCoombs was active in the P.O.W. Association, the West Nova Memory Club, Royal Canadian Legion Mersey Branch No. 38, the Veterans Association and the Air Crew Association.223
