Donald Hiltz worked at Boeing in Renton, Washington before entering the United States Navy in 1951. While in the Navy, he served on aircraft carriers USS Point Cruz and the USS Badoeng Strait. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1954, Donald Hiltz and his family returned to the Mount Vernon area where he learned the carpentry trade from his father-in-law. He was employed by Columbia Valley Lumber Company as a truck driver before going to work at the Shell Oil Refinery at March's Point, Washington. In 1968, the family moved to Pateros, Washington, where he continued his work in carpentry. He built the family home along with other buildings in Pateros. He worked on several dams, including Grand Coulee, Chief Joseph and Bonneville on the Columbia River along with ones in Sitka and Ketchikan, Alaska.
