Walter Hubley was regarded as an ardent sportsman and well-known for his knowledge of fishing and hunting, which were his great interests in life. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Guides Association and travelled to many parts of Canada and the United States where he participated in Sports and Guides Meets. For many years, he was a sawyer in mills in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, and although he was not educated he was known for his skill as a tallyman.40
