Trained in Aldershot and Liverpool, England, he joined the front lines where he courageously fought for two years as a sapper manning a Bren Gun. In 1981, Bert retired after 30 years as a driller for the Fundy Gypsum Company of Windsor, Nova Scotia. He was a loyal and dedicated warden of Christ Church Anglican in Windsor for 43 years.248
