Before she married in 1947, Bernice Meister taught school in Leville and on Tancook Island, Nova Scotia. She fondly remembered those communities but most of all the children. Bernice Hiltz found pleasure in serving in both her community and church. For many years she was involved in the Brownie and Girl Guide movement. Other community activities included the Messengers of Music, an honorary member of the Charing Cross Garden Club and a founding member of the New Ross Historical Society, all in New Rod, Nova Scotia. In the United Baptist Church at New Ross, she was at various times Sunday school superintendent and teacher, a deacon, Ladies Auxiliary member, choir member, and director of the men’s choir.210
