Chesley Lockhart enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He was an air gunner and wireless operator (Flight Sergeant) serving overseas from January to November 1943. He returned to Canada and was stationed in Prince Rupert, British Columbia in 1944 until he was discharged on 31 October 1945. He returned to Coldbrook, Nova Scotia with wife, Sally and attended the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, graduating in 1948. He went to MacDonald College at St. Anne de Bellevue, Québec and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture as a plant pathologist and later to McGill University in Montréal, Québec in 1957 to receive his Master of Science degree.
Chesley Lockhart commenced his employment with Agriculture Canada in the summer of 1948 and full time in May 1950. He worked on blueberry diseases and the storage of vegetables and fruit. He served as the President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service Alliance of Canada for 4 years (1976-1979) in Ottawa, Ontario. He returned to Kentville in 1980 to resume working for Agriculture Canada until retirement in March 1989. He joined the Kentville Lions Club in 1966 and served as Secretary, President, Treasurer and as Chairman of several different committees. He received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award in 1998 and remained active in Lions and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. He was also involved with Fidelis House and the Air Cadets.
Chesley Leroy married Selma Corrina Mathison. Born on 19 Sep 1925 in Dodsland, Saskatchewan, Canada. Selma Corrina died in Kentville, Kings Co., Nova Scotia, Canada, on 18 Jun 2014; she was 88. Buried in Jun 2014 in Steam Mill Village, Kings Co., Nova Scotia, Canada.
Selma Lockhart was a veteran of the Second World War. She enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in September 1942 and trained as a wireless operator in Ottawa, Ontario. She was stationed in Montréal, Québec and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, receiving her discharge in January 1945. Sally Lockhart was later employed for 20 years in various positions at the former Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital, Kentville, retiring as an EKG Technician in 1988.
