Benjamin Smith was one of the most outstanding business men of the town, and as a fishing captain and later in his association with the firm of W.C. Smith and Co. Ltd., was always prominently identified with the fishing industry. Since 1923 he had been president of W.C. Smith and Co. Ltd., which firm he and his brothers organized in 1899 with the late W.C. Smith as head. Under his guidance the firm had expanded until it was considered one of the leaders in the line. He was widely known throughout the province, and as he was of a benevolent nature and always took a great interest in both church and town affairs, he will be greatly missed. He was a director for some years of the Lunenburg Marine Railway Co. Ltd., Honorary Past Master and Treasurer of Unity Masonic Lodge, No. 4, A.F. and A.M., also a member of Loyal Orange Lodge No. 1603; a member of the Lunenburg Club and a Warden for a great many years of Saint John’s Anglican Church, of which he was a consistent member and in affairs of which he always took an active part. At the age of 12, Captain Eleazer Zinck started a sea life as a sailor on square riggers. He received his master’s papers at an early age which launched him on an extensive service in foreigh trade. Captain Zinck sailed his vessels throughout the North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, travelling from Newfoundland through the Mediterranean to Greece and the Isle of Sicily for salt. Ports of Spain and the West Indies were frequent callings. Veteran skippers, some of them former shipmates, termed him one of the foremost seafarers left in the province. During the First World War, Captain Zinck had his most thrilling experience. The Ida M Zinck, sturdy schooner owned by the captain, had been buffeted by storms on a voyage from a port in Spain to Newfoundland with salt. Provisions were gone. A steamer was sighted but heavy seas made it dangerous to launch a dory to get supplies. Volunteers were ready but Captain Zinck himself set out over the distance between his ship and the steamer. By skillful seamanship he reached the side, and food was stowed in the frail dory. As the captain bore down on his vessel on the return journey to a mountainous sea lifted his dory, carried him over the railing of his schooner to the deck.

On another occassion his ship lost its rudder on a trip to the West Indies from Lunenburg. By making a jury rudder, the Captain Zinck navigated his vessel safely homeward. During a heavy storm he spent four hours repairing the masthead sprung by the gale. While sailing the Mildred Adams, Captain Zinck broke his leg during a storm. The vessel was several days from Lunenburg so the skipper set his broken leg, made splints from pieces of wood and kept them in place with spun yarn. In port a local physician praised him for his feat. Captain Zinck retired about 1929.31
