Andover Hunter is Shot Accidentally By Brother-in-Law
Reginald Meisner Shot In Hip When Mistaken For Deer By Bethel Man, His Brother-In-Law – Whistle Signals Arranged But Did Not Work – Meisner Dies Shortly After Arriving At Hospital – Investigation Under Way By County Authorities.
Mistaking his brother-in-law, Reginald Meisner, 28, a farmer of East Andover for a deer, Leon Abbott, of Bethel, shot and fatally wounded Meisner while the two men were deer hunting on Farmer’s Hill, Sunday afternoon [November 9, 1930] about 4:15. The case is being investigated by County Attorney Flanagan and Sheriff Harry O. Stimson.
Meisner was shot in the right hip by Abbott who was using a .38 calibre special army automatic pistol. The wounded man was rushed to the Rumford Community Hospital, but hemorrhages set in and he died about 15 minutes after arriving at the hospital at 6 o’clock Sunday night.
Rabbit Hunting
The two men, Abbot and Meisner, who are brothers-in-law, started out rabbit hunting early Sunday afternoon. Meisner carrying a 12 guage shotgun, and Abbott a .38 calibre special army automatic pistol.
Separate
Late in the afternoon when the two men were on their way home, according to the reports given authorities, Meisner suggested that the two men separate as they were working through a good deer hunting region. Before separating they arranged a series of signals. If any game was spotted the one seeing the game was to whistle to the other.
Whistles to Meisner
Abbott told authorities this week that after leaving Meisner he had proceeded along through the woods. Suddenly he saw something moving in the bushes. He watched the bushed for awhile, and decided it was a deer nibbling at some low hanging sprouts, he whistled to attract Meisner to the scene. He received no answer to the signal.
Takes Careful Aim
Believing the object moving in then bushes to be a deer, Abbott took careful aim and after due deliberation, fired. The bullet pierced Meisner’s right hip. The Wounded man was removed from the woods and taken to the Rumford Community Hospital, where he died when hemorrhages set in.
Meisner was slightly deaf. It is understood and it is believed that this may account for his not hearing the signal whistles. After the accident Abbott was prostrated with grief.
Investigation
Monday morning Abbott reported the accident to the authorities. County Attorney Flanagan and Sheriff Harry D. Stimson began an investigation at once. They are working on the case at the present time. (Rumsford Falls Times, 13 Nov 1930, p. 1)
