Nancy Guptill was elected to the Summerside, Prince Edward Island Town Council in 1982 and re-elected in 1985. In 1987 at the encouragement of Liberal Premier Joe Ghiz, she sought and won the nomination as a Liberal candidate for a by-election for the 5th Prince riding. On 14 September 1987, she was elected with a large margin to sit in the Prince Edward Island legislature. Nancy Guptil was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island for 12 years during which she served as Minister for Tourism and Park (1989-1991), Minister of Labour (1991-1993), Minister responsible for the Status of Women (1991-1993) and as Speaker of the House (1993-1996). After the Liberals lost power in 1996, she served as Opposition critic for health, tourism and justice until she retired in 2000.

Within the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party, Nancy Guptill held various positions. She sat on the 4th Prince Women’s Liberal Association, was an executive member of the 5th Prince Liberal Association, held most offices including president of the 5th Prince Women’s Liberal Association, was fundraising co-ordinator in 4th and 5th Prince, was a campaign worker in 4th and 5th Prince, Egmont and Malpeque, and servedl as co-chair of a provincial leadership campaign.

After the 1993 provincial election, Nancy Guptill served as Speaker of the House in the Liberal government Premier Catherine Callbeck. The government of Catherine Callbeck marks the first time in Canadian history that women held all five positions of power: Premier Catherine Callbeck, Leader of the Opposition Pat Mella, Speaker of the House Nancy Guptill, Lieutenant Governor Marion Ried, and Deputy Speaker Elizabeth Hubley. In addition, the monarch was Queen Elizabeth II.

In May 1964 Nancy Evelyn married Gregg Guptill in Halifax, Halifax Co., Nova Scotia, Canada. Born in 1943 in Milton, Queens Co., Nova Scotia, Canada. Gregg died in Summerside, Lot 17, Prince Co., Prince Edward Island, Canada, on 27 Apr 2020; he was 77.
