Harry Cleveland answered the call of his country and at the age of seventeen joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.), serving from 1942 to 1945. With unusual aptitude for all things mechanical, he won his class gold medal as an aero engine mechanic and was promoted to crew chief at only nineteen years of age. When discharged from the R.C.A.F., he enrolled at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia where he achieved his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. He worked 35 years as a Government of Canada Research Scientist in Halifax, Nova Scotia and was bestowed the honour of Scientist Emeritus. He authored, co-authored and refereed countless papers in leading scientific journals and pioneered many laboratory techniques still used today, including sublethal testing on fish while others focused only on the lethal effects of pollutants. His research concerning the impact of acid rain on Atlantic salmon is internationally recognized. In 1985 he was awarded the Government of Canada Award for Long and Efficient Service. He lived and breathed the Forest Industry all his life with his family and his partner Harry Freeman Sr. They incorporated in 1975 as Harry Freeman & Son Ltd. Actively involved in industry associations, he was a director of the Forest Products Association of Nova Scotia, Maritime Lumber Bureau and Independent Sawmill Association. He was a member of the Wildlife Advisory Council for the Minister of Natural Resources. He held offices in numerous volunteer organizations - many of these reflected his life-long interest in sport, environment and the outdoors. He chaired the Building Committee and led the effort which built the Greenfield Recreation Centre and the Greenfield United Baptist Church in Greenfield, Nova Scotia. He was driven to provide recreation and other facilities for the young and old of the Greenfield area. He was an active member of the Greenfield Recreation Association, Greenfield United Baptist Church, Greenfield & District Fire Department, Royal Canadian Legion and Jolly Ponoquers Senior’s Club.77

On 26 Jun 1946 Harry Cleveland married Elfreda Inez Slauenwhite, daughter of Frank Ervin Slauenwhite & Fanny Laura Riley, in Greenfield, Queens Co., Nova Scotia, Canada.9 Born on 21 Nov 1926 in Chelsea, Lunenburg Co., Nova Scotia, Canada. Elfreda Inez died in Greenfield, Queens Co., Nova Scotia, Canada, on 20 Aug 2021; she was 94.48 Occupation: School Teacher.

Alean Freeman received her teaching diploma from Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro, Nova Scotia and later upgraded her license at Dalhousie University in Halfax, Nova Scotia. She taught briefly in Milton and Liverpool, Nova Scotia, but the majority of her career was spent in her beloved two room schoolhouse in Greenfield, Nova Scotia where she taught grades pPrimary through phree from the 1950s to the mid-1980s.77

In 1951 Alean Therese married Abraham Lincoln Freeman, son of Robie Wyburn Freeman & Cora Gertrude Arenburg. Born on 10 May 1917 in Buckfield, Queens Co., Nova Scotia, Canada.9 Abraham Lincoln died in Greenfield, Queens Co., Nova Scotia, Canada, on 26 Jan 2007; he was 89.77

After working a few years in the local woodlands in Queens County, Nova Scotia, Lincoln Freeman moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where he worked at Clark Ruse Aircraft Company. Joining the Canadian Aarmy in 1942 during the Second World War, he saw service in England, Scotland, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. After the War he returned to Canada and worked at Orange Crush in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I n 1948 he moved to Greenfield, Queens County, Nova Scotia where in 1951 he married his wife Alean Freeman. He worked for the Department of Fisheries, mostly on the Medway River, until his retirement in 1982. He was one of the original members of the Greenfield and District Fire Department serving as chief for 21 years, thereafter being named Honourary Chief. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, member of the Acadian District IOOF, member of the FSNA South Shore Branch, and Sexton, Trustee and Field Council member of the Greenfield United Baptist Church, as well as Trustee of the Parsonage. He sang in the choir for many years, was bass singer in the Greenfield Four Quartet, taught and was Superintendent of the Sunday school, and was a Young People’s leader.77

Joyce Strum graduated from Liverpool High School in Liverpool, Nova Scotia at age 16 and then entered her nursing training at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Québec. She graduated in 1949. She returned to Liverpool, Nova Scotia and worked for the Victorian Order of Nurses (V.O.N.) and as night supervisor at Queens General Hospital in Liverpool. It was during this time she married her husband Walter Freeman of 53 years. Living and working as a family in many communities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Joyce Freeman was always an active community member in addition to raising a family. She continued her nursing career at Dawson Memorial Hospital in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia; at Dartmouth General Hospital in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, at Saint John General Hospital in Saint John, New Brunswick; and at the Halifax Infirmary in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was an active member in the Kinette Club and Charter President of the Yarmouth Club. She was co-ordinator of the Kinsmen National Convention in 1965 and commissioner of Girl Guides for Northern New Brunswick and Western Region, South Shore, Nova Scotia. Joyce Freeman was also director of the V.O.N. Board for Queens County and served as secretary-treasurer of The Arthritis Society as well as assisted in fundraising at their Queens County Annual Golf Tournament receiving a certificate of merit. As an active citizen, she served as president of the Greenfield Area Ladies Sewing Circle, clerk of Greenfield United Baptist Church, president and charter member of the Greenfield Area Jolly Poniquers Senior Club.79

Joyce Strum died from dementia.
