When John Eli Emino married Susan Borden, he stated that he was a widower. His first wife was still living and had moved to Boston in 1885 with their children and an Italian man named Paul Pauline. Having remarried without a divorce, John Eli Emino was a bigamist.

On 5 Sep 1870 John Eli first married Sophia Elizabeth Ernst, daughter of Philip Ernst & Maria (Fanny) Wambold, in Northfield, Lunenburg Co., Nova Scotia, Canada.10 Born on 11 Apr 1852 in Northfield, Lunenburg Co., Nova Scotia, British North America.4,4 Sophia Elizabeth was baptized in Lunenburg, Lunenburg Co., Nova Scotia, British North America, on 22 Jul 1852.4 Sophia Elizabeth died in East Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, U.S.A., bef 1930; she was 77.

In May 1885, Paul and Lizzie Pauline (ages 25 and 23 respectively and incorrect) left Liverpool, Nova Scotia on the schooner Willie Freeman whose master was William Harnish. Travelling with them was Jennie Ernst (age 15), Ida Pauline (age 12), Edward Pauline (age 11) and Albert Pauline (age 9). Paul Pauline was a violinist. Lizzie Pauline was his wife. Jennie Ernst was a servant. He was born in Italy but stated that he was a United States citizen. Lizzie Pauline and the four children were born in Nova Scotia. The passenger manifest with 29 passengers is dated 5 May 1885. There in no public record in Nova Scotia or Massachusetts of a marriage between Paul Pauline and Sophia Elizabeth Ernst Emeno.

Paul and Elizabeth Pauline with three children resided at 219 Chambers Street, Boston, Massachusetts according to the 1900 United States census. Her daughter and son-in-law Ida and Edward McLeod lived in the household. The census states that Elizabeth Pauline gave birth to five children by 1910 of which all were still living. Ida McLeod had given birth to one child by 1900 who was still living [but was not in the household on census day]. Paul Pauline was a musician. Albert Pauline and Edward McLeod were photographers. Paul Pauline immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1870 and was not naturalized. Elizabeth, Albert and Ida Pauline immigrated to the United States from Nova Scotia in 1880 and were not naturalized. The 1910 United States census states that Paul and Lizzie Pauline with an adult daughter resided at 130 Meridian Street, [East] Boston, Massachusetts. Paul and Lizzie Pauline rented their home. His step-daughter and step-son-in-law Ida and Edward McCloud with a son lived in the household. Florence St.Clair and her two children were lodgers in the household. The census states that by 1910 Lizzie Pauline had given birth to five children of whom two were still living. Despite listing a child, the census did not state how many children Ida McCloud had given birth to. Paul Pauline was a violinist in a band. Edward McCloud was a messenger for an express company. Ida McCloud was a shoe binder at a shoe factory. Joseph McCloud was a box nailer at a shoe factory. Mary Pauline was a candy mixer in a candy factory. Paul Pauline immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1870 and was not naturalized. According to the 1920 United States federal census Paul and Elizabeth Pauline resided at 130 Meridian Street, [East] Boston, Massachusetts. They rented their home. A Mrs. Emeno with a bady girl had been residing in the Bedford census district, Halifax County, Nova Scotia to the 1901 Canadian federal census. She had been living in the household of Thomas Norris. She was the housekeeper. The census data on them is incomplete.  While the 1901 census normally provided birth day, month and year, for Mrs and baby Emeno it states about 1865 and about 1899 respectively.  The entry for them states that "those persons left the house the day before the enumerator called.  no farther account could be got of them."  Thomas Norris appears to have left as well as the entry includes him.  (RG 31-C-1, 1901, Halifax Co., ED 33-G1, Bedford, p. 4)
