Joseph reported seeing the ghost ship the Young Teazer which is well-known in the folklore of Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, particularly the Mahone Bay area. His observations were recorded and published by noted folklorist Helen Creighton in Bluenose Ghosts (Halifax, N.S.: Nimbus Publishing, 1994 [reprinted.]). Her interview with Joseph Hyson was circa 1956. Helen Creighton wrote: “One day I went to call on Mr. Joseph Hyson of Mahone Bay, a kindly old retired sailor of eighty-eight who had sung me several chanties. Our conversation turned to the Teazer and he said, “My mother was a Mader from Mader’s Cove and she saw it several times, and I’ve seen it too. One Christmas Eve, we were coming from Halifax in a south-east wind. It was dark and a storm was coming up. There was a man up forward looking out, and the skipper had to go forward too. I had the wheel and one of the men said, ‘What’s that?’ and here was a bog red light coming up. It looked like an explosion. Could it have been the moon? No, it couldn’t possibly have been the moon, not on a night like that and seeing it as we did. The moon!” (Great disgust in the last word)”
In September 1960 the Halifax Herald Chronicle (NSARM MFM no. 5870, Chronicle Herald, September 3, 1960, p. 11) did a feature story on Joseph Hyson. The article was entitled “Ninety Years Young and Rarin’ For Action” and follows: “Joseph P. Hyson of Mahone Bay celebrated his 92 birthday recently. He is still active in body and mind and recalls happenings of 50 and 60 years ago the same as things that happened yesterday. He has a good vegetable garden which he looks after and piles his own wood and still shaves every morning with a straight razor, he does his own house work and cooking as his wife is not in as good health as he. Mr. Hyson is a member of Manchester Unity I.O.O.F. Lodge and attends meetings regularly.”
“Mr. Hyson was born in Mader’s Cove on 22 August 1868 the son of Alfred and Mary Hyson, in 1873 the family moved to Clearland where Mr. Hyson attended schoo1 until he was 14 [in 1882]. He went to sea on the schooner Norns which was mastered by his father, as a flunky (deck boy), fishing in North Bay off P.E.I. At 18 [in 1886] he graduated to a dorey fisherman which he did for some years off Western and Grand Banks. He then sailed on the old square riggers carrying salt fish from Newfoundland to Brazil then back to Turks Island for salt or to the West Indies for Molasses or sugar for New York, Boston, Halifax, Lunenburg and Mahone Bay. In all Mr. Hyson followed the sea for 32 years, the last 15 years [1901-1916] as a cook. He says he was very lucky as he was never in any disaster except once when the schooner he was on was carried from its anchor to the rocks on shore and broke the rudder however, the crew was able to reload it on the full tide.”
“In 1916 Mr. Hyson started carpentering work in Halifax and was there during the Explosion of December 1917. In 1920 he moved back to Mahone Bay and worked in John MacLean’s shipyard. Then in 1923 he went cooking again for R.A. Blanchard Lumber Company in East Princeton, Mass. He returned again to Mahone Bay in 1925 and worked in J. Ernest [Ernst] and Son Shipyard until 1938 when went on his own jobbing at carpenter work.”
His obituary in the Halifax Chronicle Herald states that Joseph Hyson was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters for 69 years and the a member of the Manchester Unity Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows for 67 years. Both he and his wife Sarah were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mahone Bay for many decades.
