During the First World War, Earl Hiltz served in Europe with the Canadian Engineers. After the war, he was a fireman and engineer with the Dominion Atlantic Railway. Later, in 1933 he was appointed caretaker of the Kentville Post Office in Kentville, Nova Scotia. He retired from there in 1961 after 28 years.27
