In his earlier years, Clayton Whynacht sailed on various rum-running boats. After the Second World War, he fished for a number of years with Briny Deep Fisheries, and later with National Sea Products of Lunenburg, Scotia for 16 years until his retirement. During the Second World War he served with the Reserve Army at Camp Aldershot, Kings County, Nova Scotia and later in Prince George, British Columbia.
