Charles Hyson and his family had lived in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey since 1939. He was a mechanical engineer with New Jersey Bell Telephone, Morristown, New Jersey for 41 years before retiring in 1971. He received his bachelor's degree in engineering from Tufts University in 1928 and his master's degree in business administration from Harvard University in 1930.
Active in community affairs, Charles Hyson was an exempt member of the Mountain Lakes Volunteer Fire Department and was named a life member in 1981. On March 18, 1943, he bravely rescued a young boy, Billy White, who had fallen through the thin ice on the Bay of Deep Waters in Lake Arrowhead, Denville, New Jersey. He was a long-time member of the Community Church and past vice president of its Men's Club. He was a member of the Mountain Lakes Sewer Commission, treasurer of the Mountain Lakes Chapter of the American Field Service and volunteered with the R.S.V.P. Program of the Red Cross and the Lakeland Hills Y.M.C.A. He was the first president and a founder of the Park Lakes Tennis Club. In 1986, Mountain Lakes jointly honored Mr. Hyson and his wife, Jessie, as Mountain Lakes Citizens of the Year for their exemplary service to the community, and November 10, 2006 was named "Charles Hyson Day" on the occasion of his 100th birthday.
