Soldat auf Otzberg, ab 1655 Taglöhner (Day Labourer) in Nieder-Klingen, ab 1666 Bürger (citizen) in Hering.

Records state that he was born at Dannenkirch. Dannenkirch is most probably Tannenkirch (near Kandern) which is located about 15 km. north of Basel.

Terry Punch writes:
In the Hessian reference they suggest surname variants for Gilch : Gylly, Gilg, and Gülch. In the Einwohnerbuch der Markgrafschaft Baden-Durlach im Jahre 1709 I found Tannenkirch. There were no people of that precise name, but there was a "Hinterlas" (migrant) named Friedlin Göltzlin. Once you notice that -lin is a German diminutive suffix, the surname emerges as Göltz. Speak it in local dialect (Tannenkirch is in the Schwabisch dialect area whereas Otzgberg Hering is Franconian), and it is easy to see how Göltz, pronounced GILTSCH in Baden could be written GILCH in Franconia where some of the TCH is omitted in the TZ sound.

Then I wondered, "If Friedlin Göltzlin was a migrant, were there families of that surname inthe vicinity?" I found three places, as follows, where people of cognate names appeared in Baden-Durlach in 1709:
(1) Opfingen/Freiburg: Joseph GELTZLIN, citizen
(2) Laufen/Müllheim: Melcher GELTZLIN, citizen
(3) Tüllingen/Lörrach: Friedlin GÖLTZLIN des Gerichts, Hans GÖLTZLIN, Joseph GÖLTZLIN, all three were citizens.
If you locate those three place on the map of SW Baden and you can see that Tannenkirch falls amidst them. Tüllingen is a tiny place which I had trouble pinpointing. It is a smallish place on the Swiss border and is at the centre of a triangle formed by Lörrach, weil am Rhein, and Riehen, Switzerland, virtually a suburb of Basel.

I notice that several 19th-century emigrants from the Odenwald surnamed Gölz are mentioned in Ella Gieg's volumes 2 and 4. Perhaps they stem from the soldier at Otzberg Hering?

The name Gilg turns up in a very eligible Swiss location, I notice. Gilgs had citizenship at Aristau, Canton Aargau, from before 1700. Aristau stands above the west bank of the River Reuss which flows north into the River Aare and thence into the Rhein.
On 8 Oct 1655 Hans married Barbara Lutz in Hering [bei Otzberg], Kur-Pfalz, Holy Roman Empire.82
