John Charles Moss was court martialled at Manchester, England and convicted on 22 November 1875. He was convicted of “1., enlisting in the Royal Artillery whilst in a state of desertion from the 36th Regiment and obtaining a free kit; 2., Desertion from the 1st Battalion of the Royal Artillery; 3., Losing articles of kit; 4., Destroying articles of kit whilst a prisoner in the barrack cells”. He was Anglican and a carpenter. He was five-foot, six inches tall with a ‘fresh’ complaction, brown hair and grey eyes. He was ‘well made’ with a cut mark on the forehead, and right knee, star of the left arm, triangle on the back of the left hand, boil mark on the back of the neck.
