“A boy named Joseph Liplaw was drowned yesterday while bathing in a waterhole in Victoria Park.” (Brisbane, Australia: The Telegraph, Thursday, 19 October 1876, p. 2)

Magisterial Inquiry
A Magisterial inquiry was held this morning, at the Central Police Court, before Mr. W.H. Day, into the cause of death of a boy named Joseph Liplaw, aged about eight years.
George Walker, a lad eight years of age stated: I live with my father in Hill-street, and go to the primary school in Leichhardt-street with my brother, who is seven years of age: deceased went to the same school as us; on Thursday my brother and I went to the Victoria Part to get a stick; in coming bck past one of he waterholes we saw Liplaw and two other boys bathing; Liplaw was trying to float on his back, but could not and sank; thought he was drowning, and ran and told a man, and went to the pond, and I went for a policeman; then I went back, and saw he body, which had been brought out of the water.
Alexander Allen, baker, having been sworn, stated: I recollect last Thursday: at about two o’clock, when coming along Bowen Bridge road, two little boys called and told me that a boy was drowned in a waterhole in the park; went there and another man came and recovered the body, which I took from him and carried towards the hospital, when Dr. Thompson met me; left the body with him.
Dr. Thompson, house-surgeon at Bribane Hospital, deposed to the cause of deathbeing asphyxia from drowning.
The enquiry then closed. (Brisbane, Australia: The Telegraph, Monday, 23 October 1876, p. 3)

“An accidental death by drowning occurred yesterday [18 October 1876], in one of the waterholes in Victoria Park. The victim was a boy named Joseph Liplaw, aged seven years, who resided in Hope-street, Spring Hill, with his parents. The boy left home in he morning to attend Leichhardt-street school, and at dinner time went to bathe, with two ther schoolmates, in one of he brickmakers’ holes, of which there are several in the park. His companions gave the alarm, and the body was taken out of the water by Messrs Allen and Cahill. Dr. Thompson, of the hospital, examined it immediately after, and declared life extinct. It was conveyed to the residence of the boy’s parents by senior-constable Kelly. There are no more treacherous bathing resorts in Bribane than these holes in Victoria Park; of uncertain death, slippery sides, and with most tenacious muddy bottoms, they are perfect death traps.” (Rockhampton, Australia: The Rockhampton Bulletin, Wednesday, 25 October 1876, p. 2)
