In 1826-27 Francis and his brother John Jacob Boehner owned two vessels: the Wellington (98 tons, 88.9 metric tons) and the John Eliza (68 tons, 61.7 metric tons). These ships were involved in the import/export trade out of Lunenburg, N.S. (DesBrisay, p 487).
According to Belcher's Farmers Almanack (Halifax: C.H. Belcher, 1829-31) for the years 1829-31, Francis was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Lunenburg County Regiment of Nova Scotia Militia.

"Capt. Hibbert Elias Boehner left Lunenburg, Nova Scotia during the winter of 1827. He went to New York City where he joined the crew of the whaling ship Mobile, which was bound for the South Pacific. He quickly became cabin boy and later navigator under the guidance of Capt. William Lawson. In 1833 Lawson made him Second Mate and on the following voyage he became First Mate. In 1837 Hibbert Elias Boehner became the youngest sea captain at that time in the world. In 1838 Capt. Boehner became a Mason in Antwerp, Belgium (Malvern [IA] Leader, 3 April 1980). During the 1850's he and his family resided at Indianola, Texas [which was destroyed by a hurricane in 1886, the ruins of which are located near present-day Port LaVaca, Tx.], where he served as mayor three times (unknown Iowa newspaper obituary). During the Mexican War, he commanded a government vessel and during the U.S. Civil War commanded a Unites States government transport vessel, the Convoy (Mills County Tribune [IA], 29 December 1904). According to the family Bible, he was captain of the steamer Thomas Collyer on 11 December 1862. Shortly before the Civil War, the family removed from Indianola, Texas to Williamstown, New York where they resided until 1868.
In 1868 Hibbert E. and his family removed from New York state to Council Bluffs, Iowa and in 1870 to Milton, later renamed Malvern, Iowa. In 1871 he was elected to the first board of Directors of the Malvern Independent School District. The following year he was elected to the first town council when the area was incorporated as the Town of Malvern. In 1878 the town was re-organized, and Hibbert E. Boehner was elected as its first mayor. He also served as a justice of the peace. (Malvern Leader, 3 April 1980)
Capt. Boehner began a mercantile business in 1870. He opened a succession of stores on 3rd Ave and later 1st Ave. in Malvern during the 1870's, 1880's and 1890's. In later years his son Leonard W. Boehner was his partner. (Malvern Leader, 3 April 1980).
