Yesterday afternoon [4 December 1883] about 20 minutes to 5 o’clock a sad accident occurred at the new Methodist church in this town, resulting in the sudden death of Mr. James Hall, a well-known citizen. Mr. Hall was working up on a scaffolding near the tower of the church and while stepping along the plank his foot slipped, and was precipitated to the ground his head striking first and badly fracturing his skull. Medical assistance was at once summoned, but withoy avail, the unfortunate man ceasing to breathe a few minutes after falling. The body was conveyed to the shop of Mr. J. Frank Hall, a son of the deceased, who at the time of the accident was at Halifax on business. An inquest was held at ½ past 5 o’clock, before Coroner Aitken, and the following verdict returned: “That the deceased, James Hall, cam to his death by falling from the scaffolding on the roof of the Methodist Church, thereby fracturing his skull.” (Lunenburg Progrss Enterprise, 5 December 1883)
