Despite registering the American draft in June 1917, James Hall travelled to the United Kingdom to fight in the Great War. Lt. James Grantley Hall was a member on the 60th Squadron of the Royal Air Force during the First World War. On 8 August 1918 before the Second Battle of the Somme, he was killed in the air over German lines. He is buried in the Somme American Cemetery, Bony, L’Aisne, France.65
