Douglas Barkhouse joined the Royal Canadian Navy on 17 March 17 1961 embarking on a career which saw him travel the globe, serving on a number of ships as well as instructing at Canadian Forces Fleet School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As a Naval Weapons Technician, he was involved in the introduction and maintenance of the Sea Sparrow Weapons systems in the 1970s. In December of 1986 as a Chief Petty Officer First Class, he retired to take a civilian consulting position and was involved in the weapons programs during the building of the Halifax Class Frigates for the Royal Canadian Navy. He was also a past president of the Naval Weapons Technician Association. Always an avid athlete, Doug Barkhouse participated in many sports but had a passion for hockey and golf continuing to play both for the duration of his life. He was a founding member and has served as President of the Chester Old-timers Hockey Club; as well he shared his love and knowledge of the game by coaching minor hockey for many years.128
