John Ernest Hiltz purchased 300 acres of land for £50 on 12 July 1784 from his parents. The land was part of Lot 8 which was located on east side of the road from Fort Sackville to Fort Edward (in Windsor). John Ernest and Lydia Hiltz moved to New York. They sold their land in Sackville to John William Schwartz on 22 March 1794.

A John E. Hiltz was enumerated in the 1800 United States federal census. He and his family resided in ward 7, New York, New York. The household consisted of three people: one free white male age 26 to 44; one free white female age 26 to 44; and one free white female uner age 16.
