On 30 Dec 1860 John married Catherine Kessiah Langille, daughter of John William Langille & Mary Catherine Kedy, in Martin’s River, Lunenburg Co., Nova Scotia, British North America.16 Born on 16 Aug 1834 in Martin’s River, Lunenburg Co., Nova Scotia, British North America. Catherine Kessiah died on 21 Apr 1905; she was 70.

Their widowed son-in-law James Backet with two daughters lived in the household. John Hiltz was a farmer. James Backet was a fisherman. The widow Catherine Hiltz with a daughter, a grandaughter and a grandson resided in the Oakland census district, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia according to the 1901 Canadian federal census. Catherine Hiltz was a farmer. Her granddaughter Beatrice Backet was a domestic in the household. Fourteen-year-old Peter Hisler lived in the household. James Hyson was a lodger and servant.
