Triple Drowning at East Dalhousie

Three Kentville Men Meet Tragic Death When Canoe Upsets At Lake Torment Early Sunday Morning

Three young Kentville athletes, all of them good swimmers, lost their lives at Lake Torment, East Dalhousie early Sunday morning in one of the saddest tragedies ever enacted in Kings County.

Trapped in the middle of the lake three-quarters of a mile from shore, the trio were doomed when their frail canoe capsized in rough water, according to the tell tale evidence of floating garments and the upturned canoe which drifted ashore. The victims, who were on a fishing trip, were: Cecil Parks, 23, Kentville Atlantics hockey player, father of three small children. Garnet Barkhouse, 22, Kentville Wildcats hockey player, single. Roy Hale, prize swimmer, father of a three month-old child. The three had set out in a canoe at 6.30 in the morning, while others in the party remained ashore. Four and a half hours later the canoe drifted almost to the door of the camp where the others awaited them to return. Later clothing was found indicating that the three fishermen had struggles in the icy water to reach shore.

Horrified, the party in camp immediately started a search, when the upturned canoe gave first intimation of the triple tragedy. The coat worn by Barkhouse was found, indicating he had shed it in his efforts to swim to safety. Then a cap believed that worn by Hale was picked from the still turbulent water, followed by a hat, believed to have been worn by Parks. East Dalhousie residents said it was the first drowning tragedy ever to occur on the lake. The bottom is muddy and the shore rocky. Because of the wind and high waves, dragging was impractical for the time being, but sluice gates have been opened and every effort is being made to recover the bodies of the victims.
