Never one to sit idly, William Rooneypicked apples, packed potatoes at Maple Leaf Fruit Co. of Canning, Nova Scotia, sold fish door to door, collected empty bottles from ditches, had his own taxi business and snack bar and did whatever else he could to provide for his family. His introduction to school busses began when he started driving for the local school board mainly bussing students to and from Cornwallis District High School in Canning. In the late summer of 1963, he purchased his own school bus and then drove students to and from Kings County Vocational High School in Kentville, Nova Scotia, later Kings Regional Vocational School. He then formed his own school and charter bus business, W.C. Rooney Transportation Ltd., which he successfully ran for 35 years. In 1944 Bill joined and served in the Militia until the end of the Second World War and for many years, was a member of the Canning Fire Department and Royal Canadian Legion, Habitant Branch No. 73.44
