Frederick Hiltz earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a doctorate in physiology at Cornell University inIthaca, New York. Most of his career was in medical informatics, notably in the development of pioneering hospital information systems, in veterinary medicine at Cornell University and human medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He served on the board that developed and standardized M, an American National Standard programming language commonly used in the field in hospital information systems.
