Lewis Whitney enjoyed a long career as a self-employed trucker, maintaining his membership in the Truckers Association of Nova Scotia long after his official retirement. After he had stopped actively trucking, he concentrated on developing his woodlands. He particularly enjoyed his Christmas Tree lots. He took great pleasure in helping people find just the right tree and, for many years, he was a member of the Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners and Operators Association. Lewis Whitney was very active in the community of Halls Harbour, Nova Scotia. He was a life-long member of the Halls Harbour United Baptist Church where he played a critical role in obtaining the Veteran's Memorial Stone to commemorate those who fought for their country. In addition to his involvement in the Halls Harbour United Baptist Church, he took great pride in his nineteen years of service to the Halls Harbour District Volunteer Fire Department as a director.213
