After marriage, Lindsay and Margaret Gates moved to Halifax to pursue his education, set down roots and raise a family. A passionate fan of the automobile, and everything that entailed, he studied auto body repair at trade school and began a career that spanned six decades of working, teaching and mentoring in automotive related positions. As an employee he worked with Trainor GMC, Canavan’s Insurance Appraisal Services in Nova Scotia and The Co-operators Insurance and Financial Services of Canada. Throughout his career and after retirement, he continued to work, volunteer, and serve on a variety of boards and committees of automotive related organizations, especially those that he considered relevant in building a brighter and safer future for the next generation of automotive specialists. A passionate community supporter and volunteer, Lindsay Gates always made time to serve organizations such as The Boy Scouts of Canada, St. Andrew’s Anglican Church of Timberlea, Nova Scotia, the Beechville Lakeside Timberlea Rails to Trails Association and the Community Monitoring Committee of the Otter Lake Landfill. He was a passionate hunter and fisherman and relished every moment spent outside and with his hunting and fishing friends. He was an ardent steward of the earth and always a proponent of planning current use to ensure future supply whether on his woodlot or in his annual vegetable garden. Lindsay was a natural leader and teacher.213
