Christian Messenger - Friday, 13 February 1852 - Page 51 -
Awful accident near Lunenburg - Casper Tanner and his wife were drowned, last Tuesday, at the Blue Rock, near Lunenburg. They were attempting to cross from the main land to an island, across a very narrow passage. The husband first fell in, the wife reached her hand, and endeavoured to pull him out, but her weakness and the severe cold, prevented her success, and she fell in, quite near him. The poor fellow, stoutly gave directions to a person at hand, to procure a rope from a schooner in the passage, and throw it to him. This was done, but the person slipping his hold, and Tanner pulling with all the strength of despair, the hole was made larger by the rebound. For an hour Tanner continued to give directions to the other, calmly and judiciously, but it pleased God, in his inscrutable wisdom, to forbid them success. - Their son, a little boy, threw his sled to his parents, and the mother partially supported herself with it, and was rather frozen than drowned. They leave one married, and six young children, to all of whom we trust this awful bereavement may be specially blessed, as a solemn warning to be ready. On Friday a vast assemblage met at the sad funeral. Both sexes joined in the solemn procession.
The bell ceased tolling, and the solemn tread,
Of slow receding footsteps died away,
Till all was gloom for thinking on the dead.
The Revd. Mr Cochran added an excellent sermon, to the pathetic services of burial, and powerfully carried home to many within the church, that which is so often forgotten, amidst the cares and employments of the world. Be Ye Also Ready.
