In 1941 at the age of 18, Donald Maxner joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and later the Royal Canadian Merchant Navy. He served until 1946. After the Second World War, he began his 35-year career with the Nova Scotia Department of Public Health. Donald Maxner was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 23, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and a member and past president of Unity Lodge of the Masonic Order. He was a member of Central United Church, Lunenburg.247
