She began her teaching career in Petite Riviere, Nova Scotia, continuing in various schools in Lunenburg County, the Junior High School in Milton, Queens County, Nova Scotia and then grade six in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.

From 1935 to 1940 he practised medicine in Upper Stewiacke, Nova Scotia when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force medical corps. He served as a flight lieutanant. He was discharged in 1943 and started a medical practice in Kentville, Nova Scotia and eventually joined the staff of Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital in that community. In 1949 Dr. Buntain did a postgraduate programme in ophthalmology at the New York Polyclinic in New York City.
Dr. Buntain served on the Kentville, Nova Scotia town council from 1956 to 1960. He was chairman oof the Kentville school board from 1958 to 1960. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party and served as president of the Kings North Progessive Conservative Association. John Buntain was a member of the Horton Masonic Lodge.
