Harvey Turner attended the Massachusetts Agricultural College (Mass. Aggie, now the University of Massachusetts, Amherst) and garduated in the class of 1937. He majored in dairy industry and bacteriology. After four years training in the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Mass. Aggie, he was commissioned second lieutenant in the Calvalry Reserve and promoted to first lieutenant in 1940. From 1937 to 1941, he was dairy technician at United Farmers of New England, headquartered in Morrisville, Vermont, where he met his wife Hazel Sawyer and married in 1939.
Harvey Turner was called to active duty with the U.S. Army Air Corps in Tampa, Florida in 1941 as a first lieutenant. Duty assignments took him to many air bases throughout the United Stsates where he was in charge of organizing and training units of the Air Service Command for movement overseas. He was appointed shipment supervisor in 1944 for 1,200 Air Force personnel to be sent to Bari, Italy as replacements.
Upon his return to the States, Harvey Turner was assigned to Venice Air Field in Florida to organize and train an Air Service Group consisting of 1,100 Chinese to be shipped to China as part of the United States Air Force there. He was assigned to the 75th Air Service Group as squadron commander and group executive officer and went to Guam in early 1945 as part of the 315th Bombardment Wing (B-29s) stationed at Northwest Field in Guam. He served as wing transportation and refueling officer during his time in Guam, returning to the U.S. in late 1945. Active in the Air Force Reserve, he served as commander of the 9319th Air Reserve Squadron in New Jersey and later as commander of the 9263rd Air Reserve in Stamford, Connecticut. In 1975, he was retired from the Air Force with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
His business career in management started in 1946 with Sheffield Farms (a part of Kraft Inc.) in New York City. For five years he was general manager of the Connecticut division headquartered in Stamford. During the last four years with the company, he was general manager of the Long Island division, headquartered in Richmond Hill, Long Island, New York.
He was a past president and honorary life member of the New York State Association of Milk and Food Sanitarians. While living in Stamford, he was past president of the Suburban Stamford Kiwanis Club and president of the district Republican Club.
Harvey and Hazel Turner bought the Stamford Motel in Manchester, Vermont in 1963. In 1977, they sold the motel to their daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Steve Geriak. In retirement, his activities included: Manchester Lions Club since 1965, president in 1970; trustee, First Congregational Church, Manchester; charter member, greens committee chairman and member of the board of governors of the Manchester Country Club; chairman, district I committee, Vermont Travel Information Council; member (eight years) and chairman (three years) Manchester Zoning Board of Appeals. Harvey Turner died from respiratory failure and influanza. He suffered from dimentia.
