In 1942 at the age of 18, Russell Whynott enlisted in the Canadian Army and after 20 months of service was discharged due to health reasons. He went on to be employed as a carpenter working for various employers including the Department of National Defence at CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia from which he retired in July 1987. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and trapping.28
