Family of Isac Salzmann (1)
2. Casper Friedrich Salzmann (Isac1). Born abt 1746 in Malchin, Hzm. Mecklenburg, Holy Roman Empire. Casper Friedrich died in Martin’s River, Lunenburg Co., Nova Scotia, British North America, on 28 Nov 1832; he was 86.1
It is not known when Friedrich Salzmann arrived in Nova Scotia. He may have come a child to Lunenburg in 1753 as part of another household. However, he was in Lunenburg by 1775 when he signed the membership rolls of Zion Lutheran Church. In the 1792 poll tax, Frederick Saltzman is listed at Oakland (which on this listing included Indian Point). He paid one Schilling tax. (RG 1, vol. 444, no. 49) The 1793 poll tax lists him at Indian Point. He paid two Schillings seven and ha’pence. He owned four neat cattle and 15 sheep and was assessed at a rate of ha’pence per sheep and three pence per neat cattle in addition to the poll rate of one Schilling. (N.S.A., RG 1, vol. 444 1/2, nos. 2-6) In the 1794 poll tax, Frederick Saltzman paid a tax of two Schillings nine and ha’pence. He owned five neat cattle and 13 sheep and was assessed a rate of three pence per head of cattle and ha’pence per sheep. He was a farmer at Indian Point. (RG 1, vol. 444 1/2, nos. 32-33) Finally in the 1795 poll tax, Frederick Saltzman paid a poll tax of two Schillings 10 pence. He owned five neat cattle and 14 sheep and paid at the same rate as in 1794. He was a farmer at Oakland (which on this tax listed included Indian Point.). (N.S.A., RG 1, vol. 444 1/2, nos. 67-71) At some point after 1795 Friedrich Salzmann removed from his half 30 acre lot at Indian Point lot 1 and bought land at Murderer’s [Martin’s] Point, N.S.
Frederick Saltzman and George Melchior Zwicker bought an island off Indian Point on 28 January 1796. They paid David and Jacob Bourgogne £24 for the island (N.S.A., RG 37, [LU], vol. 4, no. 358). On 28 December 1798 he sold his share of the island at Indian Point to George Melchior Zwicker for £15 (N.S.A., RG 37, [LU], vol. 5, no. 30). The island is now known as Zwicker Island.
Frederick Saltzman bought on 12 December 1797 from George Knickel a lot of land at Murderer’s Point, Chester Township. In May 1815 and September 1816 he transferred this property in two shares to his sons Michael and Casper respectively (N.S.A., RG 37, [LU], vol. 4, no. 438 & vol. 7, pp. 90 and 141). The deeds of 1815 and 1816 state that Frederick’s wife was Catherine Elizabeth. Frederick Saltzman last appears in the deed records when under sheriff’s order, he was required to sell his property at Martin’s River. The property was sold for debt on 10 February 1823 (N.S.A., RG 37, [LU], vol. 8, p. 60).

On 25 Mar 1783 Casper Friedrich first married Johanna Deladeray, daughter of Jean-Louis Deladeray & Anna/Susannah Rösti, in Lunenburg, Lunenburg Co., Nova Scotia, British America.2 Born abt Feb 1757 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, British America. Johanna was baptized in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, British America, on 27 Feb 1757.1 Johanna died in Martin’s River, Lunenburg Co., Nova Scotia, British North America, on 21 Dec 1802; she was 45.3
Johanna Deladeray had previously been married to William Hall from Connecticut. No record of their marriage has been found in Halifax, Lunenburg or Chester, Nova Scotia. They probably married in Connecticut. They had one child in Nova Scotia who was born shortly before or after his death. William Hall’s burial also is not found among various church records at Lunenburg.
At some point in the early 1770s, Hannah Deladeray may have gone to New England with her brother James Louis. Probably in New England, she married William Hall of Connecticut (Joh. Hal of Gnädyketstadt in Zion Lutheran Church register). They returned to Lunenburg at some point during the American Revolution while her brother apparently remained in New England. James Louis Deladeray may have married into a Patriot family while William Hall was apparently a Loyalist. Hall died in Lunenburg, N.S. about 1782.
The first indication that Hannah Deladeray had returned to Lunenburg was the sale of her father’s property in December 1782. On 18 December she sold the town lot C-9 in Rudolf’s Division to John Vogely for £4.16.0 and her thirty-acre share of 90-acre lot Mahone Bay A-1 to Casper Jung for £336 (Nova Scotia Archives (N.S.A.), RG 47, [LU], vol. 3, nos. 35-36). The deeds of sale do not mention her brother Louis. After her marriage to Friedrich Salzmann, he bought half of Indian Point lot 1 from Anthony Halter on 21 June 1784 for £83 (N.S.A., RG 37, [LU], vol. 3, no. 190). On 24 September 1784 he mortgaged his property at Indian Point to Casper Jung for £84 as security on Mahone Bay A-1 against the possible return of her brother (N.S.A., RG 37, [LU], vol. 3, no. 206). This was done to secure Louis Deladeray’s share of the inheritance of their father should he claim it. On 14 October 1784, Friedrich Salzmann bought property from Timothy Lynch at Western Shore/Gold River lot 3. He bought 100 acres or half of lot 3 for £60 which he shortly thereafter mortgaged to Casper Jung as further security against Mahone Bay A-1 (N.S.A., RG 37, [LU], vol. 3, nos. 211 and 302).

On 2 May 1809 Casper Friedrich second married Anna Catherine Elisabetha Schlear, daughter of Jacob Adam Schlör & Catherina Elisabetha Hartmann, in Lunenburg, Lunenburg Co., Nova Scotia, British North America. Born in Dec 1755 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, British America. Anna Catherine Elisabetha was baptized in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, British America, on 22 Dec 1755.
