Richard Underhill served honourably in the United States Army Air Force during the Second World War and was a commissioned officer with a pilot rating. He left the Army Air Force in 1945. He attended Nichols Junior College in Dudley, Massachusetts and graduated with an associate in business administration (honours) in 1947. While there, he was active with the college newspaper, the glee club and the social committee, and played football, tennis, and hockey. He was captain of the hockey team. He went on to Boston University, where he received his bachelor of science (magna cum laude) in 1951. While at B.U., he was a member of the student council, the advertising club, and the Tau Mu Epsilon Fraternity.
Richard Underhill and his family moved to Westfield, New Jersey in 1954. For many years, he worked for Anchor Corp in Elizabeth, N.J. wholesaling securities before going into business for himself as a certified financial planner. He was a member of the Westfield Historical Society, the Westfield Tennis Club and the Plainfield Camera Club. Both he and his wife were active in the Congregational Church in Westfield. He taught at both the local college and at the Arkansas Police Academy before working as a licensed private investigator and polygrapher for the Southern Arkansas area. He then worked for 12 years for the Union County Sherriff's department in El Dorado, Arkansas as a criminal investigator.
