During her early working career, Madeline Reeves was employed at Moir's Chocolates and The Nova Scotian Hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After studying at the Normal College in Truro, Nova Scotia she taught in mostly one room schoolhouses in rural areas including Lake Ramsey, New Russell, Ironbound Island, Lavell, Granville Centre, and Belleisle, Nova Scotia. Madeline Walker was known for her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, making "New Ross" wreaths, quilting, crocheting and taking a variety of creative courses including ceramics, rug hooking, caning and furniture refinishing which meant that many friends, neighbors and family benefited from her expertise and gifts. With Mel Walker, her husband and partner of over fifty years, she danced with the Riverside Square Dancing Group and was always known for her stylish outfits and her toe tapping enjoyment of country music. Over the years she participated in many community activities including teaching Sunday School and holding active membership in the ACW at St. Mary's Anglican Church in Belleisle, Nova Scotia and various groups in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia: Bridgetown's Coffee League Bowling, Bridgetown's Senior Lawn Bowling Association, and Bridgetown Cider Bells, later known as the Lunch Divas. She was also a member of the Upper Granville, Nova Scotia Women's Institute (chartered member for over 30 years) and was a strong supporter and avid member of the Progressive Conservative Association.165

Maurice Reeves was a woodsman all his life, working as a sawyer for many years and later owned a logging operation. He was an avid horseman and competed in many horse-pulling competitions at county and community fairs. He belonged for many years to the New Ross Farmers Association.60

After finishing her education, Dorothy Russell taught school at Canaan, Nova Dcotia during 1949 and 1950 and then at Upper Vaughan and Leminster, Hants County, Nova Scotia in 1951 and 1952. She was later employed as a bookkeeper in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She married Maurice Clayton Reeves on September 18, 1954 and in the early years worked with him cooking in the logging camps and later as the bookkeeper for the family’s logging and Christmas tree business. Dorothy Reeves supported him for many years at horse pulls at various fairs and exhibitions throughout the province and also with the International Horse Pull in the United States.60

During her early days, Della Reeves worked as a cook in several lumber camps and for a brief time ran her own lumber business. She was also employed as a bookkeeper for many years. Dellla Hiltz then turned to her love of handcrafts, sewing for Suttles and Seawinds of Mahone BNay, Nova Scotia and owning her own business. She is well known for the quality of her workmanship and has received several prizes and awards in competitions for crocheting and quilting over the years.161

Harold French graduated as a marine engineer from the dock yard in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He worked on the cable ship S.S. Lord Kelvin [of the Anglo-American Telegraph Company], before he moved to Woburn, Massachusetts with his wife Elsie and son Bruce in 1949. In 1955, the family moved to Candia, New Hampshire, where he worked for Sprague Electric Company in Concord until retirement. (obituary, The Forum, Deerfield, N.H.)

Foster Hiltz worked as a mill worker and a truck driver. He managed his own land through logging and Christmas tree farming. Foster Hiltz was also a woodsman working in lumber camps where he had many good tales of those days. He worked on the board of directors with the Forties Community Centre, WAYS (We Appreciate Your Service), and Family Services. He was a member of the St. Augustine's Anglican Church, The Forties, Nova Scotia where he was a church warden for many years. He loved being a member of the Mahone Bay and Area Lions Club in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia.115
