In contrast, the 1881 British census states that James Valentine resided at Eastgate, Peterborough, Northamptonshire. He was a 26-year-old, unmarried head of household who was born at Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire. He was a bricklayer's labourer. Caroline Wilmot and her son John resided in James Valentine's household. She was his housekeeper. The census states that Caroline Wilmot was married. She was born at Biggleswade, Bedfordshire and her son John at Peterborough. (RG 11, piece 1593, folio 84, p. 21)
Sometime during the mid-1880s JamesValentine married Caroline Winfield Wilmot. Record of their marriage has not found. Caroline Winfield appears to have been married previous to marrying James Valentine. The 1881 census states that Caroline Wilmot was married. It also appears that James Valentine adopted his wife's son John Wilmot.
James Valintine and his family resided at [Tenter] Hill, Stanground, Huntingdonshire according to the 1891 British census. James Valintine was a brickyard labourer. He was born in Brampton, Huntingdonshire. Caroline Valintine was born in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. John Valintine was born in Peterborough, Northamptonshire while siblings Mary and James Valintine were born at Fletton, Huntingdonshire. The 1901 census states that James Valentine, his wife and family lived on North Street, Stanground. James Valentine was a brickyard labourer. John Valentine and his son William were railway platelayers. Chales Valentine was a coal miner (hewer). John Valentine was born at Brampton, Huntingdonshire. Eliza and Charles Valentine were born at Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire. The other children were born at Alfreton. Eliza Valentine gave birth to seven children, all of whom were living in 1911.
