John Paulsen was a house painter. He played the cello and participated in the orchestra that was formed by his brothers Iver, Carl, Christian and Martin Paulsen. Later he was part of the Paulsen String Quartet which played on radio station WGI out of Medford, Massachusetts in the 1920s. The Paulsen String Quartet included his brothers Iver on the 1st violin and viola, Christian on the viola and Martin on the 2nd violin. The quartet ended when he was killed in a car accident in 1936.
