William Ernst was a barrister at law. During the First World War, William Ernst served in the Canadian Expedionary Force in France. He was a captain in the 85th Canadian Infantry Battalion (the Nova Scotia Highlanders). The battalion fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. After the war, he became involved in federal politics as a Conservative Party member. In the 20 October 1925 federal election, stood for election to Parliament in the Queen-Lunenburg constituency and lost. In the 14 September 1926 election, he won the seat to represent Queens-Lunenburg. He was re-elected in the 28 July 1930 election and was defeated in the 14 October 1935 election. The Conservatives were the governing party from 1930 to 1935 when William Ernst briefly served as Minister of Fisheries from 14 August to 22 October 1935 in the government of Richard Bedford Bennett. Edward Ernst worked for the Bank of Montreal after completing university at Queens University in Kingson, Ontario. He started with the bank in the Martime Provinces before being transferred to the New York City office about 1931. He served in the bank’s New York office for eleven years after which he was transferred to the head office in Montreal. He retired from the Bank of Montreal after 47 years of service having become the executive vice prsident of international banking. He then worked for the First Wisconsin National Bank of Milwaukee as senior vice-president and was the manager of the branch office in London, England for two years. In 1962 Edward Ernst led a Canadian government trade mission to Israel after which he was elected president of the Canada-Israel Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He served in that position for four years and then became an honourary governor of the the organization. He was a member and officer of many trade-related organizations among which were the Canadian Exporters Association, the Canadian section of the International Chamber of Commerce, and the Italian Chamber of Commerce. He was a fellow of the Canadian Institute of Banking. Edward ERnst was a founding director of the Bank of London and Montreal which was based in Nassau, the Bahamas. He complete post-graduate studies in international banking and foreign exchange at the New York University School ogf Business Administration.45
