LeRoy Zwicker attended and graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art. He furthered his art education at the Skowhegan School of Art in Skowhegan, Maine. He spent some time in New York City, New York working in an art gallery until the Great Depression caused the gallery to close leading to his return to Nova Scotia. Back in Halifax, Nova Scotia, LeRoy Judson was a manger of three Moirs’ stores while continuing his art work and assisting in his father’s shop, Zwicker’s Art Store.
In 1942 LeRoy and Marguerite Zwicker took over the family business which they continued until retirement in 1968. They established the Granville Gallery within the business. The Granville Gallery was a space for the Zwickers to bring contemporary art to Halifax. The gallery was successful in that it brought art to the people of Halifax. The gallery exhibitted and promoted Nova Scotian, Canadian, English and French art. The Zwicker Art Shop with its gallery became Zwicker’s Gallery which continues to operate in Halifax; it is trhe oldest commercial fine art gallery in Halifax.
He was president of the Nova Scotia Society of Artists and the Maritime Art Association. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Museum of Fine Arts (which is the predecessor to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia) and was an honourary governor of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. He was also a governor of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design which in 1970 bestowed an honourary doctorate of fine arts upon him.
LeRoy Zwicker was a painter and etcher. He was a writer and art collector. He co-founded the journal Maritime Art which was published 15 issues between 1940 and 1943. It was Canada’s first art magazine. It became the quarterly magazine Canadian Art in 1943 and from 1968 to 1983 was named artcanada before reverting back to Canadian Art. LeRoy Zwicker was the business manager of Maritime Art.
The art work of LeRoy Zwicker has been displayed at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario and the Paris Salon in France. Additionally his work has been exhibitted with the Maritime Art Association, the Nova Scotia Society of Artists, the Ontario Society of Artists, the Art Association of Montreal, the canadian Society of Grapgic Art, and the Society of Canadian Painters, Etchers and Engravers. He may be founded in Who’s Who in American Art. When the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia held its inaugeral exhibition inb 1975 with the show LeRoy J. Zwicker: A Retrospective examnining 50 years of his work. In 1988 two galleries were named the ‘LeRoy and Marguerite Zwicker Gallery’ in honour of the contributions they made to art community in Nova Scotia and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Marguerite Porter attended and graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art in 1927 after which studied under the German-American abstract expressionist painter Hans Hoffman, among others. Marguerite Zwicker was a watercolour painter who focussed on Nova Scotia villages and landscapes. She taught painting at the NOva Scotia College ot Art from 1927 to 1929 and at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia from 1931 to 1933. From the death of her father-in-law Judson Zwicker in 1943, she assisted her husband LeRoy Zwicker in running the Zwicker Art Shop later Zwicker’s Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was a member of the Nova Scotia Society of Artists. Her work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (which has over 50 of her watercolours and sketches), the Nova Scotia Society of Artists, the Royal Canadian Academy, the Montreal Art Association and the California Watercolour Society as well as in New York and Calgary. Her works is held by the Nova Scotia Museum, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre and the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery.
