The 1880 United States federal census states that Smith and Mary Brown with her three children resided at Boston, Massachusetts. Smith Brown and Judson Hiltz were labourers. Lewellyn Hiltz was driver. Smith and Mary Brown and Judson Hiltz were born in Nova Scotia. (T9-557, Massachusetts, Suffolk Co., ED 698, Boston, p 305A)

According to the 1900 United States federal census, S. and Mary Brown resided at 181 Belmont Street, Everett, Massachusetts. They owned their home mortgage free. Mary Brown had given birth to six children before 1900 of whom two were living. S. Brown was a night watchman. He immigrated to the United States from Canada in 1861 and was naturalized.
