LETTER: Demolition of former restaurant is ‘paying respect to the Eisner family’

MIDDLETON, N.S. — Here is the beginning of Eisner’s:

My parents, Ellis and Lou Eisner, with their two sons, Roger and Bruce, moved to Bridgewater in 1948 to open the first restaurant on King Street in Bridgewater. The business quickly turned into a huge success and, a few years later, Mr. Eisner opened another restaurant in Mahone Bay. Unfortunately, this venture did not succeed and was closed about a year later.

In approximately 1957, Mr. Eisner went to Middleton to open another restaurant. He rented the building that became known as Eisner’s Restaurant. In the early 60s, a fire destroyed the kitchen and two apartments. The building was cleaned up quickly and, after a few weeks, Mr. Eisner opened the restaurant with an open kitchen while the fire damage was repaired.

After a few more years, he undertook a major addition to the front of the building, adding eight feet to its size and a renovation to the dining room, with was then the latest style in restaurants. The dining room was designed by a firm in Montreal.
In approximately 1964, Mr. Eisner purchased a small restaurant in South Berwick called the Villa Lunch, which quickly had great success. Next, he went to Hebron in Yarmouth County and opened yet another restaurant after he renovated it. This restaurant was a seasonal operation only.

At this point is where Isabelle Nickerson entered the picture and became the manager of the restaurant. Mr. Eisner and his first wife, Lou, built a number of very successful businesses together and, as Eisner`s grew larger, Mr. Eisner formed an operating company to handle the businesses, Ersta Services Ltd.

After a few years, he sold the Hebron restaurant and Isabelle Nickerson moved to Middleton to take over the kitchen and dining rooms. Isabelle was a very capable kitchen manager and dining room supervisor/server. Shortly after, Lou Eisner divorced Ellis and he married Isabelle.

From about the age of five, his son Bruce worked around the restaurant in Bridgewater, chopping French fries and operating the dishwasher. In 1960, Mrs. Eisner and their youngest son moved to Middleton. They still operated the Bridgewater restaurant until about 1963, when it was sold. During summer vacation from school, Bruce worked at the restaurant in South Berwick. Bruce joined the restaurant full-time after graduating from high school, and he was the night manager along with many responsibilities in the office completing accounting duties.

A number of years later Mr. Eisner’s oldest son, Roger, his wife and three children, moved to Middleton from Halifax to join the business. Roger and his family left the business shortly after joining the business, deciding it was not a good fit for them, but stayed in Middleton. Bruce left the business approximately a year later. In about two or three years, Mr. Eisner sold the business to Isabelle’s son, Mark, and a business partner. After a short period of time, the business partner sold his share to Mark and his mother, and he continued operating the restaurant. Sometime after, Isabelle retired from actively working in the restaurant.

From this point onward, the business declined and endured several closures over winters and other seasons. Once a very popular restaurant then became a shadow of its former self and finally closed, tarnishing the fine reputation Eisner`s Restaurant had. Over the period of years, a few other eating establishments attempted to establish themselves with little success.

Now, all that is left are the memories of what once was a great restaurant. The building was in a shameful state of disrepair before it came down. Tearing down is paying respect to the Eisner family. As the last surviving family member of the original owner, I am glad to see it gone - at least now we can all remember the fond memories and the good times.

Sincerely,
Bruce E. Eisner
