The 1871 Canadian federal census states that John and Agnes McLean with three children resided in the Mahone Bay census district, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. Her widowed mother Mary Ann Blysteiner lived in the household. John McLean was a photographer. The family were Methodists with the exception of Mary Ann Blysteiner who was a Lutheran. John MacLean became a prominent boat builder in Mahone Bay. His company was known as MacLean and Sons. According to the marriage record of his daughter Ella MacLean in 1879, John MacLean was a photographer. The marriage records of his sons state that he was a boat builder.

John and Agnes MacLean with three children resided in the Blockhouse census district, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia according to the 1881 Canadian federal census. Her widowed mother Mary Ann Blysteiner lived in the household. John MacLean was a boat builder. The family were Methodists. John and Agnes MacLean and their family appear in the 1901 federal census (Lunenburg 37-T, Mahone Bay, p. 6 [house 58, family 60]). He owned two houses on Main St. in Mahone Bay. He and his family resided in a 13-room house. He owned 200 acres, a store and a barn. His son Charles resided in the other house next to his father. The MacLeans were Methodist. Her mother, who was Lutheran, resided with them.

The 1911 Canadian federal census states that the widow Agnes McLean resided at Mahone Bay, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. John E. Mader died from an enlarged prostate and cystitis.
